Kevin Helms has been selected by his peers as the Forest Hills High School Teacher of the Year. Helms is a graduate of Forest Hills himself, and his dedication to the school and his genuine love of teaching are evident to his students and colleagues alike. Senior Michelle Barrett, who was in Helms’ AP U.S. History class last year, says, “He’s a hilarious teacher…. He’s an inspirational teacher. He helps you when you’re down and need that pep talk for the day. He’s not one of those ‘feed it to you’ teachers; he basically feeds it to you, but then makes sure you digest it.â€
Helms graduated from Western Carolina University and began his teaching career at Parkwood High School in 1993. He transferred to Forest Hills in 2000 and teaches all levels of U.S. History. He also coaches football and advises the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He is currently the Social Studies Department Chair and serves on the Scholarship Committee, Senior Committee, and National Honor Society Committee.
Outside Forest Hills, Helms teaches Sunday School at Hamilton Cross Roads Baptist Church and enjoys hunting, playing golf, and spending time with his family.
His favorite teaching strategies are to use humorous stories to teach students about historical events and concepts and to integrate technology to enhance lesson content that many students may find irrelevant to their lives.
When asked about being selected as Teacher of the Year, Helms replied, "There are many great teachers here at Forest Hills; therefore, I am very blessed to have the honor of Teacher of the Year bestowed upon me this year."
